Spirit Airlines Travel Guidelines For Children

Lap Children

Spirit Airlines considers individuals aged from 0 to 17 years as children. When you are making the reservations for your kid, you will be required to put his date of birth, following which you can decide whether or not to secure a seat for your infant.

The airline allows infants as young as 7 days old to fly as lap children until they turn two years of age. However, one can also purchase a seat for their infant if they choose to do so, but the kid must be secured in an FAA- approved child restraint system. Here are the significant guidelines you must know about the travel of lap children. 

• Each passenger aged 15 years or older is permitted to have one lap child accompanying them.
• A seat must be purchased for the return journey if a child turns two years old between the outbound and return flights.
• Spirit Airlines reserves the right to request age verification for any passenger aged 2 years or younger. Therefore, be ready to present documents like a birth certificate or a passport.
• As per federal regulations, kids aged 24 months and older will no longer be considered lap children, and a seat must be purchased for travel.
• Children in laps or car seats are not allowed in the emergency exit rows nor on the rows immediately adjacent to these exits.

Children Traveling Solo

As per Spirit Airlines, children who are 4 years old and younger can not travel alone and must be accompanied by an adult aged 15 years or older. Those who are 5-14 years old are classified as unaccompanied minors if they are traveling without an adult. Unaccompanied Minors may only be accepted on direct flights (including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico) that do not involve a change of aircraft or flight number. The spirit unaccompanied minor fee is $150 for every segment of the journey. 

• For smooth solo travel for your kid, please notify the airline that the booking is intended for an unaccompanied minor during the reservation.
• Please ensure you check in at the ticket counter no less than 60 minutes before the scheduled departure.
• At the time of check-in, adults dropping off the child must complete an unaccompanied minor form at the airport.
• The individual responsible for dropping off their unaccompanied minors in Spirit Airlines at the airport must obtain a gate pass from the ticket counter and remain there until the flight has departed. 
• The parent or guardian designated for pick-up on the unaccompanied minor form must arrive at the airport ahead of time to acquire a gate pass and be present at the gate for the arrival of the aircraft. 

Traveling With Strollers And Infant Carriers

Spirit Airlines allows passengers to check in one stroller and one car seat per child at no additional charge. Furthermore, if you are traveling with two children, you can carry a double stroller without incurring extra fees. Unless you are not buying a separate seat for your kid, you may bring an FAA-approved child restraint system (car seat) or an FAA-approved child harness device (CARES).

Those traveling with kids aged 2 years or younger can bring diaper bags at no extra cost. Please note that diapers will not count towards the airline’s baggage allowance that permits one free personal item and one paid carry-on. 

Does Spirit Airlines Allow Families to Sit Together?

Spirit Airlines will assign a seat at no additional cost; however, the airline does not assure you will be seated alongside your loved ones. If you are traveling with a minor, please ensure to select seats during the booking process, and if you are unable to do so, the gate agents and flight attendants will strive to provide seats that are next to each other whenever possible.

Spirit Boarding Zones- Priority For Families 

Spirit operates with a total of six boarding zones. Families traveling with children three years old or younger are eligible for family boarding, the fourth zone.
